Thinking Of Yourself Less

“He must become greater; I must become less.” John 3:30

We live in a world of constant self-promotion, self-aggrandizement, selfies, self, self, self.

It’s intoxicating and blood-rushing.

Let’s be honest: It feels great to make life about ME.

But that’s not the call of Christ.

Yesterday, our senior pastor Jason reminded us that in a celebrity culture, it’s so easy to get sucked into that - the likes, the promotion, the glorification of self / people.

John the Baptist, who was about as popular as a person could be 2000 years ago, showed us a different way.

John was a big deal; then Jesus showed up.

John knew his place. HE - JESUS - must become greater; I must become less.

I’ve got much to say about celebrity culture (which is usually tied to an unhealthy honor culture) within the church. That’s for another day.

For now, as leaders in the church and Christ followers everywhere, let’s take this call seriously.

JESUS must become GREATER; I must become LESS.
