Above and Beyond Generosity

“If someone has enough money to live well and sees a person in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person?” 1 John 3:17

I’ve been chewing on this verse for a while.

I have enough money to live well.
I have:
- A house
- Two cars
- Plenty of food and clothing
- Savings & money set aside for the future

How can God’s love be in me if I don’t show compassion to those in need?

That’s a challenging question.

I don’t believe that God endorses pressured or guilt-driven generosity. But I do wonder: Am I doing enough to help those in need? If that question drives me to giving out of an overflow, it’s a good question. if that question drives me to shame and guilt for not doing enough, it’s not a great question.

Either way, it’s a challenging question and one I’ll be chewing on for a while..

God, help me to see people in need with compassion and give in above and beyond ways to help those who need.
